Man dies driving wrong way on M1
A man of 80 has died in a collision after driving the wrong way down the M1 motorway on Christmas night.

The man drove a Renault Scenic onto the motorway in Northamptonshire, but was travelling south on the northbound carriageway, police said.

The car was first involved in two minor collisions between junction 17 and the Watford Gap Services.

Near junction 16 the car was involved in a fatal collision. Police said the dead man came from north London.

The incident happened at about 1900 GMT on Saturday.

A woman involved in the third crash suffered a broken wrist and ankle and was taken to Northampton General Hospital.

The carriageway was closed until after midnight.
