Cpl Danielle Neighbour treated an Iraqi for a gunshot wound |
A volunteer soldier who treated a wounded Iraqi and then had to fire at the man's brother is to feature in the Territorial Army's new advert. Cpl Danielle Neighbour, the head medic of C Company of the East of England regiment, treated a man with a gunshot wound at a wedding in Iraq.
The Iraqi had been shot by his brother after an argument.
Later Cpl Neighbour, 23, from Northampton, had to use her gun when the brother returned, firing his gun.
Cpl Neighbour is now back working as a medical technician at Northampton General Hospital after returning from Iraq along with C Company late last year.
"I was called out after this chap shot his brother in the leg - I bet it ruined the wedding.
"I sorted out his wound and strapped him up. He was in a lot of pain but he was ever so grateful to me for helping."
'Brother still upset'
The troops took the injured man to a local hospital but were then asked to return to the scene when local police called for a military escort in order to arrest the gunman.
"The brother who did the shooting was still upset," added Cpl Neighbour.
"As we arrived he began firing directly at us.
"I ducked. We all did. But I was the only one in a position to get a clear shot back at his rooftop position.
"I put warning rounds over his head to suppress his fire while the others tried to scramble up behind him to snap on the cuffs.
"He could see we meant business. Before we could outflank him he tore across the town's tightly packed roofs and disappeared.
"The police eventually caught up with him in Basra."
Defence chiefs chose Cpl Neighbour to front the recruitment drive, being launched on Thursday, because her "professionalism and cool head" would inspire other people to join the TA.
The incident happened at Umm Qasr in southern Iraq, during Cpl Neighbour's six-month attachment in Iraq.
