The stun gun is used to subdue a suspect with electricity |
A man who resisted arrest is the first to be subdued with a taser gun in Northamptonshire, police said. Officers used the taser 'stun gun', which temporarily paralyses a target, on Tuesday morning to arrest a man wanted for robbery.
A police spokeswoman said armed officers challenged the man after he was seen walking in Market Road in Thrapston just before 0900 BST on Tuesday.
He failed to comply with their instructions and after a warning, the taser was used to incapacitate him and make a safe arrest.
The unnamed 29-year-old man, from Kettering, was arrested on suspicion of a number of robberies, and was taken to Corby Police Station where he has seen by a police surgeon.
A knife and a Samurai sword were recovered from the scene of the arrest.
Police said the scene remains sealed off and investigations are ongoing.
Northamptonshire's Assistant Chief Constable, Derek Talbot, has taken overall command of the investigation, which is to be supervised by the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).
Northamptonshire is one of five police forces currently taking part in a twelve-month operational trial of the M26 Advanced Taser.
The taser, which transmits an electrical impulse into the body, is being trialled as a less lethal option for disabling a suspect than conventional firearms.
