County offices meet 50% recycling goal

The council will ask staff to use mugs instead of throwaway cups
Hoping to lead by example, Northamptonshire County Council says it has hit recycling targets at its own headquarters.

The council now recycles half of its waste and vows to recycle 65% by 2005.

It is offering businesses in the county advice in establishing similar measures.

Cabinet member for the environment Jim Wade said: "It is important that as the authority trying to encourage others to recycle we get it right in our own backyard first.

"Praise should be given to the people behind making recycling easier for staff in our headquarters and to all workers at the council for using the facilities."

The Slim Your Bin at Work campaign has seen offices at County Hall, John Dryden House and Guildhall Road set up with recycling bins for cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, newspapers, and IT equipment.

The council also began recycling all old IT and electrical equipment, fluorescent tubes and polystyrene.

The next phase calls for staff to use mugs at work instead of plastic cups and to place more recycling bins in workcentres.
