The 34-mile Dalby Forest trail is one of the longest in the UK
A new 34-mile (55km) mountain bike trail costing more than 400,000 to create officially opens in the Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire.

The Forestry Commission trail has been lined up as a possible training venue for mountain biking events in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

The scheme won financial backing from the European Union and is designed to cater for all abilities.

It is part of a 4.3m redevelopment of facilities at Dalby Forest.

Forest management director Alan Eaves said the Forestry Commission was working with the Olympic Committee to provide training sites for national mountain biking teams competing in the 2012 games.

'Second to none'

"We have offered them a number of sites and Dalby is one of them," he said.

"The Dalby trail is second to none in England and brings us up to the international standards already achieved in Scotland and Wales.

"We have consulted experts in the field to design a unique trail in keeping with the ethos of sustainability.

"To the untrained eye it looks and feels like a natural track through the forest, but a lot of work has gone into ensuring we use local materials to fit in with the landscape."
