The body of a paratrooper killed in Afghanistan last weekend has been returned to Britain. Cpl Bryan Budd, 29, from Whitby, North Yorkshire, was serving with the 3rd Parachute Regiment when he died during a battle with Taleban forces on Sunday.
He was the 20th UK serviceman to have died in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November 2001.
His body arrived aboard an RAF transport plane at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on Friday morning.
The coffin was escorted from the aircraft by members of the 3rd Parachute Regiment before a ceremony at the base attended by family and friends.
Experienced soldier
Cpl Budd, who was originally from Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, had a two-year-old daughter, Isabelle.
His wife, Lance Corporal Lorena Budd, is expecting their second child in September and is currently on maternity leave from the army.
He had been in the Army for 10 years, serving in Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Macedonia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was about to be promoted to platoon sergeant.
His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, said he was a natural leader.
"Bryan died doing the job he loved, leading his men from the front - where he always was."
