More vehicles are available this winter to deal with snow and ice on the roads of North Yorkshire.

Ten new gritting and ploughing trucks have been bought to bring the total number special vehicles to over 100.

In addition, the county council can call on 150 farmers to help with snow ploughing in really bad conditions.

North Yorkshire is England's largest county and the council claims to now have the largest fleet of road clearing vehicles in the country.

The investment in new vehicles has been made in association with the county council's contractors, Raynesway Construction Southern (RCS).

David Bowe. assistant director of environmental services at the council, said: "The winter maintenance service in North Yorkshire is second to none due to a team who provide that service.

"It's essential they are provided with the best tools for the job."
