Production at a North Yorkshire mine is coming to an end as the last few tonnes of coal are brought to the surface. Stillingfleet colliery at the Selby pit complex has been in operation for 16 years but that will end on Friday.
Many of the 180 employees are being made redundant although around 120 will be kept on for the next few weeks to tidy the site and cap the mine shafts.
Stillingfleet is the fourth pit in the Selby coalfield to close which leaves just one in production.
Owners UK Coal said the Selby complex had suffered significant financial losses for several years.
Two years ago it announced the closure of its Riccall, Stillingfleet, Wistow and Gascoigne Wood operations by the spring of 2004.
Some of the Stillingfleet miners will be transferred to Kellingley Colliery near Knottingley.
