GPs no longer have to provide 24-hour care |
Agreement has been reached on providing out-of-hours GP cover in North Yorkshire. From next month, the North Yorkshire Emergency Doctors (NYED) co-operative will provide cover at evenings and weekends throughout the county.
NYED already covers much of North Yorkshire but the new agreement means it will extend its services to Hambleton and Richmondshire.
GPs are no longer required to work outside of normal surgery hours.
The new arrangements mean that from October, Saturday morning GP surgeries in Hambleton will end.
Responsibility for services
Under their new contracts, many local GPs will work shifts for NYED.
The crucial difference is that practices will no longer be responsible for providing and paying for out-of-hours cover.
That responsibility now falls on North Yorkshire's four primary care trusts (PCTs).
David Archer, director of operations at NYED, said: "We have been successfully providing a GP out-of-hours service in most of North Yorkshire for eight years.
"We are pleased we have reached agreement with the four PCTs for this to be continued.
"We share the ambition of the PCTs to see the out-of-hours service enhanced in the future and look forward to working in partnership to achieve this."
