Archbishop's parish move praised
Archbishop of York
Dr David Hope leaves Bishopthorpe Palace in February
The Archbishop of York has been praised by MPs for his decision to step down and become a parish priest.

Dr David Hope, 64, is leaving Bishopthorpe Palace near York to become vicar at St Margaret's in Ilkley.

Anne McIntosh, the Conservative MP for the Vale of York, congratulated him for providing "such a magnificent lead".

Labour's Sir Stuart Bell, who represents the Church Commissioners, said Dr Hope had rendered a "signal service" to the church.

Sir Stuart added: "In his role as archbishop he will be sadly missed.

"I am sure that his continued search for the saviour of souls through the parish church is most welcome."
