Car park crows are given reprieve

Two crows who were due to be killed after developing a taste for the rubber from windscreen wiper blades at a York car park have been given a reprieve.

The birds, nicknamed Russell and Sheryl, have been causing havoc at Askham Bar Park and Ride car park.

Pest controllers were due to humanely destroy the pair, but now City of York Council has agreed to move them to an area where they cannot cause trouble.

The University of York's Animal Welfare team will catch and relocate the birds.

Gwilyn Thomas, Park and Ride Officer, said the public had taken a shine to Russell and Sheryl despite the damage they had caused.

"We have decided to move them to a different area where they can't cause trouble," she added.

Drivers had been advised to wrap their wipers in towels.

The RSPB said the birds see their reflections in windscreens and attack the wiper blades believing they are rival crows.
