Arriva was unsuccessful in its bid to keep the rail franchise

The company, which recently lost the Transpennine Route to the First Group, is still operating trains in more rural parts of the county.

But the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) said it would not let Arriva renew the franchise when it ends in the autumn.

A new rail company, which has yet to be named, will take over in October.

This means Arriva will no longer be running any trains in the county in seven months time.

But the company has said it will continue to invest in its trains to ensure a reliable service for passengers.

In a newsletter to customers, it said 100 new initiatives are being implemented to make the changeover between the two rail companies as smooth as possible.
