Date set for new parking charges
Parked cars
Parking charges will be extended into the evening
Controversial new city centre parking restrictions in York will come into force by the end of March, it has been announced.

Senior members of the Liberal Democrat controlled City of York Council finally approved the changes on Thursday evening.

This was despite objections from many residents and the Labour group.

Parking will be banned at all times in many places and charges for parking extended into the evening.

Some streets where parking is free at the moment will get pay and display machines.

Trial period

People who regularly park in the city centre in the evenings, such a bar staff, will be able to save money by buying a parking season ticket.

The park and ride service will be extended into the evening for a six month trial period.

And following protests from church-goers, parking will be allowed all day on Sunday in places such as Goodramgate and High Petergate.

Painting the extra yellow lines will start on 15 March and the new pay and display machines will come into force two weeks later.

Council leaders say the cost of providing parking areas should be borne by all users rather than just those who park in the daytime.

They say the extension of double yellow lines is designed to improve access by emergency vehicles and make it easier for drivers with disabilities to park.
