Cash boost is labelled 'derisory'
Bank notes
The money was secured from central government
The leader of financially-troubled Harrogate Borough Council claims a cash boost of 100,000 is "derisory".

And speaking after the cash had been secured from Whitehall, council leader Mike Gardner said the money would not stave off cuts in services.

The town's Lib Dem MP Phil Willis, who got the funds from central government, says the money could save Starbeck baths and the musical festival.

But Coun Gardner says the hard-won cash will not solve any problems.

State of finances

Phil Willis believes both the popular Starbeck baths and the renowned International Festival, which showcases stars of the future and well-known artists, could be saved by the cash injection.

He also says that a cut in the area's council tax could be considered.

But Mike Gardner disagrees, claiming the money is not enough.

He said: "What Mr Willis is saying is poppycock.

"We're pleased with 100,000, it's no more or less than we expected.

"I don't understand how Mr Willis thinks this will create an opportunity, or influence a decision on Starbeck baths or the festival.

"He ought to know what state council finances are in before this derisory grant".

Phil Willis said he was "deeply disappointed by the council leader's comments".
