Study of RAF base closure impact
RAF Coltishall in Norfolk
The closure is expected to have a major effect on the local economy
A study into the financial and social effects of closing RAF Coltishall in Norfolk is to be carried out starting next month, it has been revealed.

The base is set to close down at the end of next year.

The study is funded by North Norfolk District Council, the county council and East of England Development Agency.

Norfolk MP and shadow defence spokesman Keith Simpson says everyone is trying as hard as possible to minimise the effects of the closure.

He said: "The most important thing in the short term is to carry out the study.

MoD involved

"The two local authorities and EEDA will use it to investigate employment, transport and other issues affected by the closure.

"Go-ahead for the study was given quickly and could conclude within a couple of months.

"The strategic group, set up to look into the implications of the pull out, are awaiting for various replies from government ministers, but the general election may delay things."

He said the Ministry of Defence was also involved in the study.

"They are as keen as local people to provide good local options for RAF Coltishall and local people, in an orderly way, to reduce the impact of the closure."
