Trees can be recycled into woodchips to provide mulch |
Waste officials in Norfolk hope festive cards, wrap, bottles and used trees find their way to recycling centres. But Breckland Council is reminding the public about holiday debris which will be rejected for recycling.
Peter Cockburn, Community Waste Officer for the council, said: "Cards and wrapping paper have become increasingly glitzy and glamorous in recent years.
"Whilst that may give a great look under the Christmas tree, it does cause problems with recycling."
Breckland residents can take Christmas trees to Norfolk County Council waste centres at Thetford, Snetterton, Ashill, Hempton and Wymondham, where they will be composted with other green waste.
People belonging to the brown bin scheme can leave their trees beside the bin or cut them up and put them in the bin.
Mr Cockburn said that some items which seem like ideal candidates for recycling, like wrapping paper or cards backed with foil or plastic, simply will not be accepted.
"Pure paper and card are great to recycle, but cards that have fabric or padding on them or even the sound chips that play those festive tunes cannot.
"And on wrapping paper look out for sticky tape, ribbons and bows - they also can't be recycled."
