Great Yarmouth has one of the best beaches in Britain for sandcastles |
Great Yarmouth has the sort of sand and water to make ideal sandcastles but is in third position behind two more resorts according to scientists. Beach boffins have also been able to create a special formula for sandcastle builders - OW0.125 x s.
That translates to one part water for eight parts of sand.
Prof Matthew Bennett of Bournemouth University, found Torquay, Bridlington, Great Yarmouth and Bournemouth were the best beaches for building a sandcastle.
He said: "The study found that Britain has a wealth of beaches that are extremely well suited to sandcastle building.
Hours of fun for people
"If people get the water-sand combination right they will have hours of fun.
"The strength of a sandcastle depends on how the grains interact, so the correct mix of sediment and water is crucial to any castle that is being built.
"Too much water and the sand will liquefy. Too little water and the sand won't bind."
Scientists visited beaches
Scientists visited popular beach resorts in Britain to collect sand samples.
The sand was evaluated for grain-size distribution, load-bearing capacity, visual aesthetics, beach cleanliness and quality.
Great Yarmouth came third in the top five beaches for sandcastle building behind Torquay, Devon and Bridlington, East Yorkshire but in front of Bournemouth, Dorset and Tenby, Pembrokeshire.
Sponsors of the study, Teletext Holidays, is holding a sandcastle building competition in Great Yarmouth in July.
