Shipyard drought threatens jobs
A shipyard is set to close next month with the loss of 29 jobs after failing to secure more work when a contract was successfully completed.

George Prior at Great Yarmouth has specialised in refurbishment of ships and boats for the past 30 years.

Three months ago, the yard completed the restoration of the Thames floating restaurant, Tattershall Castle.

Nineteen staff were laid off then. Unless more work is found in the next 30 days, the yard will close.

The entire workforce of 29 will be out of work after the deadline date of 1 October.

Paddle streamer saved

In recent years the yard has been responsible for the complete refurbishment of the ocean-going paddle steamer, the Waverley, and the refitting of its sister ship, the Balmoral.

The yard also converted a Caledonian McBrane ferry into the cruise liner, the Hebridian Princess. It returns each year for a refit.

In a statement, the company said the last year had been tough and it could no longer compete.
