Arthouse cinema plans approved
Cinema City
Cinema City is to undergo an extensive refurbishment
Plans to demolish part of a Grade One listed building to expand a major arthouse cinema in Norwich have been approved.

On Thursday, Norwich City Council approved the plans to expand Cinema City - which is based in Suckling Hall.

Suckling Hall is a medieval building which was extended in the 1920s by Norfolk architect Edward Boardman.

It was converted into a cinema and restaurant in 1977.

The medieval building will be rebuilt to accommodate a three-screen multiplex, but the facade will remain.

Picture quality

The proposals will now be put forward for government approval because of its listed status.

Cinema City has a well-established reputation as an arts cinema, focusing on world cinema and education.

Five years ago it was struggling to survive.

But now more than 3.25m is being spent on the redevelopment.

There will be improved training and education facilities and a new bar.

A digital projector will offer better picture quality.
