Go slow zones broken by residents

Speed humps are proven to help reduce road casualties
Speed limits set to appease local residents are being broken by the very people who requested them, a report says.

New research shows trial 20mph zones established in five areas in Norfolk were continually broken.

Each of the roads tested are used by local residents.

Almost half of motorists exceeded the speed limit by more than 5mph and 15% exceeded it by more than 10 mph.

The research by Norfolk Police and Norfolk County Council could be bad news for neighbouring Suffolk.

Road humps

Villagers along the A12 are hoping to have speed limits reduced by up to 20mph.

Suffolk County Council is looking at changing limits around Little Glemham, Marlsford and Stratford St Andrew to improve safety.

However, the Norfolk report states: "Despite a community wanting 20mph limits, the majority of drivers seem to view 30 mph as acceptable and safe."

The report also found 20mph zones, supported by road humps, were proven to reduce casualties by about 70%.

The residential areas selected tested included Costessey, North Walsham, Sprowston and Long Stratton.
