The number of little terns breeding on the Norfolk coast has boomed after the birds moved from their home which was badly vandalised last season. English Nature and the RSPB said the UK's biggest colony of little terns, one of Britain's rarest sea birds, is now nesting at Winterton.
This year almost two chicks per pair have been born - making it a bumper season.
Last year their nesting site on the beach at North Denes at Great Yarmouth was struck by vandals
At the height of the breeding season the vandals ripped out electric fences and wrecked two-thirds of the 90 nests in an overnight attack, scattering the breeding birds.
Mark Smart, Little Tern Project manager, said the move had done them good.
"This year they have decided the best place for them is at Winterton where we had 233 pairs which produced over 400 chicks which is stunning really," he said.
