Two "boy racers" described in court as an accident waiting to happen have been jailed.

As the two raced around Norwich, one hit of them and fatally injured a 17-year-old student.

David Lewis died 10 weeks later.

Wayne Gray, 20, of Old Catton and Christopher Deary, 18, of Sea Palling, were found guilty at Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday of causing death by dangerous driving.

Witnesses who saw them in their red Vauxhall Nova cars spoke of the cars revving at lights, tyres smoking and screeching.

Unanimous verdict

After seeing the two driving past him at speed, one witness remembered saying "Oh God they are going to kill somebody".

Gray's car struck Mr Lewis, of Smallburgh, as he was crossing Cattle Market Street near the entrance to the Castle Mall. He died from brain injuries.

After a week-long trial the jury returned a unanimous verdict.

Gray was sentenced to six years in jail and Deary to five-and-a-half.

Judge Nicholas Colman said the courts were concerned by the aggressive attitude of young drivers while in control of lethal weapons - their cars.

He said both young men had been determined to race that night with disastrous consequences.

Mr Lewis's family and friends thanked the many witnesses who had come forward and remembered a warm, loving, bright, funny and kind young man who brought happiness to so many.
