Actress Sue Johnston, known for her roles in Brookside and the Royle Family, has been appointed OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. The Warrington-born performer has been recognised for her services to drama and to charity. Professor Peter Toyne, one of the first chairmen of the Liverpool Culture Company, becomes a CBE. The culture company was behind Liverpool's successful bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2008. Johnston, 65, played Sheila Grant for eight years in Brookside before becoming Barbara Royle in the BBC show. Johnston said: "I am delighted and feel very honoured. "I am only sorry that my parents are not here as they would have been so proud". Also appointed an CBE in the list is Graham Vick, the Liverpool-born artistic director of the Birmingham Opera Company, for services to opera. Professor Raymund John Donnelly. founder and president, Roy Castle Lung Cancer has been appointed MBE. Fiona Gasper, executive producer at the Liverpool Culture Company, is appointed an MBE for services to the arts. Graeme Gerrard, the deputy chief constable at Cheshire Constabulary has been awarded the Queen's Police Medal. Also appointed MBE are Hilary Steel, of Warrington, for voluntary service to rugby league in north-west England and Emily Taylor, of Warrington, for voluntary service to St Rocco's Hospice. Those appointed OBE in Merseyside and Cheshire include Michael Gelling, of Runcorn, chairman of Tenants' and Residents' Organisations of England for his services to social housing. Sister Eileen Kelleher, of Widnes, the former chairman of council and pro-chancellor at Liverpool Hope University, also becomes an OBE for her voluntary service to education.
