Power station staff join protest

Fiddlers Ferry power station, Widnes
The Widnes workers plan to return next week

About 300 contractors have walked out of a power station in Widnes in support of workers at a Lincolnshire refinery.

Protests over the use of foreign labour on a construction site at Lindsey Oil Refinery have gone on for three days.

Workers at Fiddlers Ferry power station in Widnes have now joined several others at plants across the UK who support the Lincolnshire protest.

The GMB Union said the Wirral staff were staging a one-day walkout and planned to return on Monday.

Italian contract

All trades including scaffolders, insulation engineers, pipe fitters, welders and steel erectors are involved in the protest.

At Lincolnshire, up to 1,000 people gathered outside to protest against a 200m contract awarded to an Italian firm.

Unions said British staff should be doing the work.

Total, owners of the refinery at North Killingholme, said there would be "no direct redundancies" as a result.
