Five still held over cadet murder

Detectives investigating the murder of a Merseyside Army Cadet are continuing to question five people.

Joseph Lappin was stabbed when he was chased by up to 15 youths outside the Shrewsbury House Youth Club in Everton, Liverpool, on Monday.

Two boys, aged 14 and 15, a 20-year-old man from the Vauxhall area and a 19-year-old man, from Kirkdale, were arrested on Thursday morning.

A 16-year-old boy, also from Kirkdale, was arrested on Wednesday.

Two of Joseph's friends were also injured in the attack at about 2040 BST on Monday. One was stabbed twice and the other, also 17, suffered minor injuries.

CCTV studied

Two other suspects were arrested near the scene on the night of the stabbing, but later released on bail.

Those arrested on Thursday are being held on suspicion of the murder of Joseph and attempted murder of his friend.

Detectives have been studying CCTV footage of the area near the youth club taken before and after the attack.

Merseyside Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and Joseph's parents have urged the mothers of the culprits to "do the right thing".

John Lappin, 45, and his wife Toni, 44, visited the scene of the murder on Wednesday and left two notes attached to a bunch of flowers.
