Gerrard set to receive uni honour

England and Liverpool football player Steven Gerrard is to be given a university honorary fellowship to mark his contribution to sport.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who became an MBE last year, will be honoured by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) on Friday.

The Liverpool captain said he was proud to be honoured by a university that had done so much for his home city.

The fellowship will be conferred during a ceremony at the Anglican Cathedral.

Gerrard said: "I am very proud to become a fellow of Liverpool John Moores University.

"Not only has LJMU done so much for this city and the people of Liverpool but it has given the science of football international credibility.

"It is an honour to be recognised with this award."

Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Brown said: "Steven epitomises the university philosophy of 'dream, plan, achieve'.

"As a young boy he excelled in the sport he loves and ensured his talent was recognised, looking upon challenges as opportunities and pursuing each available avenue."

He added: "As a result he has become one of the best sportsmen in the country, if not the world.

"We are delighted to welcome him into the university family."
