The new stadium would seat 50,000 supporters |
Planning officers on Merseyside have recommended that the proposed Tesco and Everton development be approved by councillors when they meet next week. Knowsley Council planners have been considering the 400m scheme, which includes a 50,000 seat stadium and Tesco store in Kirkby, since January. They now agree it would benefit the local area and are advising the council planning committee to approve it. A local residents' action group continues to oppose the scheme. The Kirkby Residents Action Group fears the development will bring match day traffic and loss of green space. Planning officers said they "accept the submissions and arguments that if the Club [Everton Football Club] is to continue to be successful in the top flight of football, remaining at Goodison Park is not a realistic option". They also said it will help to improve quality of life for the people of Kirkby. The plans were submitted to planners in January, but have since been revised to give a greater emphasis on redeveloping Kirkby town centre and a reduction in new retail space.
