Ricky Tomlinson launched the event at Alder Hey |
Liverpool's most famous exports will be celebrated on Beatles Day, with people in the city being urged to wear "mop-top" wigs. The first of what is hoped will be an annual event takes place on 10 July. It will raise funds for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. The Rhys Jones Memorial fund will also benefit in the event's first year. The date was chosen as the anniversary of the day the Beatles returned to Liverpool after conquering America. A concert will be held at Liverpool Arena with artists performing their favourite Beatles songs. A themed parade is also planned. The first Beatles Day was launched by Liverpool actor Ricky Tomlinson at Alder Hey. Phil Redmond, from the city's Culture Company, said: "Liverpool and The Beatles are inseparable. "Liverpool made the Beatles what they were and their immortal heritage has come to play a huge role in the way the city is viewed around the world today."
