The 108-year-old Isla Gladstone conservatory will be restored

The park - one of the city's oldest - was the brainchild of acclaimed landscape designer Edward Kemp in 1886.

Repair and restoration work has begun on bridges, walls, fencing, gates and pavilions, CCTV, the bandstand and the 108-year-old conservatory.

There will also be new landscaping with more trees planted and the re-introduction of a lake. The work should be completed in early 2009

Liverpool City Council's executive member for environment and heritage, Councillor Berni Turner, said: "This is an ambitious project which will return the park to its former glory.

"This is just one of many regeneration projects taking place in north Liverpool and the improvements mean the park will now offer something for everyone and improve the quality of life for many living in the area."
