The Royal Navy has cancelled plans to bring the Ark Royal to the River Mersey next month.

Senior officers said they were not confident Liverpool's new cruise liner facility would be ready in time.

The city council said it believed the landing stage facility would be "substantially complete" by September.

But the Navy is not convinced it would be able to tie its aircraft carrier alongside for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race on 16 September.

Cruise liners

Liverpool City Council said it was confident everything would be ready to receive the QEII on her final cruise, just five days after the start of the race.

Two more sections of the facility will be floated over to the pier head from Cammel Laird shipyard in Wirral on Wednesday and Thursday.

The site is being developed by Liverpool City Council and Peel Holdings, with funding from the North West Development Agency.

It will see a 350 metre (1,148ft) extension to Princes Dock that will allow cruise liners to dock.
