Cash paves way for liners' return
The QE2 sailing into Liverpool
Larger ships could soon be cruising into Liverpool
Cruise liners could soon return to Liverpool's famous waterfront following the approval of 17m in grants.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott announced on Friday the funding for the construction of a new cruise liner facility at Pier Head.

The Merseyside Objective One programme will provide 7.1m and the Northwest Regional Development Agency 9.9m.

A new 250m (820ft) extension will be built onto the existing landing stage, allowing big ships to berth.

They would include cruise ships of up to 350m (1148ft) in length, as well as naval vessels and tall boats.

The size of the new berth will mean some of the world's most famous liners would be able to drop anchor in Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture in 2008.

The work is also expected to create 90 new jobs.

Mr Prescott said: "I started my career in Liverpool working as steward on big ocean-going liners and so am absolutely delighted that the world's largest ships will be able to dock in the city.

"It is vital to the Merseyside economy that Liverpool can capitalise on the waterfront - it is its greatest asset.

"The city was built on a great seafaring tradition and it is great news that we can look forward to maritime life being part of a bright future too."

The project is being overseen by Liverpool City Council.

Council leader Mike Storey said: "This announcement means we can look forward to liners returning to the Mersey regularly, bringing many more tourists to the city."

More than 25 cruises are expected to be tying up in Liverpool each year by 2009 and a new reception hall will be built to help welcome them.
