Racegoers heading to the Grand National at Aintree were being urged to travel by bus rather than car on the second day of a two-day rail strike. Commuters were being urged to use the free shuttle bus services that have been put on to replace trains from Liverpool city centre to Ormskirk.
The RMT union is staging the strike in a dispute with Merseyrail over plans to move guards to a 35-hour week.
Merseyside Police said the bus system ran smoothly on Friday.
Ch Supt Colin Matthews said: "Please do come early, use the park and ride schemes, if possible use the free buses.
"There is a car park in Bridle Road that holds around 2,000 cars, but if you're going to use this, please don't come in on Park Lane as that is the main route we are using for the buses."
People were being reminded to leave plenty of time for their journey.
