The Merseytram is needed for regeneration, said Louise Ellman MP
Two MPs are to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair to ask him to give the go ahead to the Merseytram project.

Liverpool city and Knowsley councils have agreed a 25m contingency fund to underwrite the project.

But it is thought ministers wanted a more open ended commitment and could still turn the tram project down.

Louise Ellman, Liverpool Riverside MP, and George Howarth, Knowsley North and Sefton East MP, plan to meet Mr Blair on Monday.

Ms Ellman, Liverpool Riverside MP, said the trams were crucial for Merseyside.

'Stops pulled out'

"The tram is very important indeed for regeneration in Liverpool," she said.

"The Paradise Street development and other regeneration projects here are based on that tram operating.

"All the stops have now been pulled out, we now want the final go ahead."

The Department for Transport has agreed to fund 170m, providing the project is underwritten.

A further 40m will come from Merseytravel and the remainder from Objective One European Social Funding and private sources.
