New traffic control centre opens

A �7m traffic control centre is being opened on Merseyside to help beat traffic jams all across the North West.

The centre, which has been built off the M6 at Newton-le-Willows, will help ease congestion and provide information about traffic blackspots.

Officers from the Highways Agency will work in partnership with the police in Merseyside, Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The centre is one of seven being built around the UK.

The Merseyside centre will serve as the base for 295 traffic officers, who will work round-the-clock to help beat traffic problems in the region.

Traffic officers will also be stationed in Knutsford, Cheshire; Milnrow, Greater Manchester and Low Hurst, Carlisle, Millness and Kendal in Cumbria.

The centre will be opened by Transport Minister Derek Twigg on Tuesday.
