A football fan is being questioned over throwing missiles during a match in which Wayne Rooney scored for Man Utd against rivals Liverpool.

The man is not being questioned in connection with a mobile phone that was thrown at Rooney after he scored the winning goal, Merseyside Police said.

The former Everton player will not be investigated after celebrating scoring the goal, police confirmed on Monday.

He ran to the Kop and cupped his ears, in a defiant gesture to the home fans.

Inspector George Dawson said: "It looks like Rooney hasn't committed a criminal offence so he won't be investigated."

If the person who threw the mobile is identified, they will be banned from Anfield.

Rooney is also set to escape a Football Association charge.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said the suspect was arrested after the match at Anfield.

"Merseyside Police has recovered a mobile phone thrown from the crowd at this match," he added.

"Officers cannot confirm if it was actually thrown at anyone - only that it was thrown; but the force is investigating this incident.

"Another person has been arrested in connection with throwing missiles at the match, unconnected to the mobile incident."

A spokesman for Liverpool Football Club said: "If the person who threw the mobile is identified, they will be banned from Anfield.

"If it is a season ticket holder their season ticket will be rescinded."
