Plan to bring former ferry home
Manxman docked in Sunderland
Manxman spent more than 20 years as a passenger ferry
A campaign is under way to bring a rusting retired ferry back to its home city of Liverpool.

The Manxman was launched from Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead in 1955 and started life as a ferry between the Isle of Man and Liverpool.

Since then she has been a nightclub in both Preston and Liverpool, and is now rusting at a dock in Sunderland.

Enthusiasts have set up the Manxman Steamship Company to raise funds to take the ship back to Liverpool.

Manxman spent more than 20 years with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ferrying passengers between the Manx port of Douglas and Liverpool.

Manxman finally went out of service in 1982 and was bought by a leisure company which docked it at the King Edward Dock in Preston.

After a short life as a visitor centre, the ship was a nightclub and restaurant until 1990, when Manxman returned to Liverpool.

After two years as a nightclub in the city, the ship was moved to Hull, but suffered a fire and vandalism before being taken up to Sunderland, where she remains.

Bill Ogle, from the Manxman Steamship Company, said he planned to raise funds this year for repairs and take her home to Liverpool in 2006.
