The changes will affect the main route used by visitors
A 15m project to upgrade a main arterial route into Liverpool in time for the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008 has been unveiled.

Major changes will be made to Edge Lane and the surrounding area, which is one of the main routes taken by visitors to the city centre.

The plans are open to public consultation and will affect the area from the Rocket pub to Hall Lane.

Cash for the scheme became available after the Fourth Grace project failed.

It has been funded by European Union Objective One money.

Bypass axed

More details are expected to be announced in the New Year.

Meanwhile St Helens Council has called for talks with Transport Minister David Jamieson after it emerged the town will miss out on funding for a new bypass.

Leader of the council Mari Rimmer said the bypass, which would ease traffic at a major junction, was vital to the town.

She said she was angry that the project had been put back until at least 2008.
