Virgin tilting train hits buffers
Lime Street station, Liverpool
Safety tests have found the rails at Lime Street to be in good condition
Rail passengers were injured when one of Virgin's new tilting trains hit the buffers at a station on Thursday night.

The Pendolino train slipped on wet leaves at Liverpool Lime Street and hit the buffers at 4mph, causing several passengers stood in gangways to fall.

Paramedics treated nine people at the scene and two others went to hospital for check-ups.

Virgin Trains has apologised to passengers and said it is investigating the incident.

A spokesman for Network Rail said on Friday it was also carrying out an investigation.

He added safety tests on the rails at Lime Street found them to be in good condition.

Virgin launched its Pendolino trains, which can travel at 140 mph and cost 11m each, last month.

However, there was embarrassment when the first Pendolino to leave Glasgow travelled just 28 miles before a fault forced its 80 passengers to disembark at Carlisle.
