Firefighters in Merseyside are threatening to strike over a trial scheme which would allow them to administer advanced first aid. A number of firefighters have been trained in basic life support and the use of defibrillators.
But the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said it would ballot if the trial continues as there had been no agreement about how it should be implemented.
The issue will now be discussed at a special meeting next week.
Life saving
Under the new project, 24 volunteer firefighters would also respond to category A life threatening emergencies alongside paramedics.
The 24 members of the Special Rescue Team, based in Croxteth, have just completed their training by Mersey Ambulance Service.
The scheme aims to ensure that life saving equipment and treatment can arrive on the scene as quickly as possible.
It was approved by the Fire Authority after a public and internal consultation, but the Chief Fire Officer Tony McGuirk has since received a letter from the FBU threatening to ballot for industrial action if the scheme goes ahead.
