More than 35,000 fireworks were set off from the cathedral roof |
Celebrations marking the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of Liverpool's Anglican cathedral have been taking place in the city. A special service was held on Sunday including a world premier of a mass composed by John Taverner.
About 35,000 fireworks were fired from the roof of the cathedral in a spectacular display on Sunday evening.
It was thought to be the largest ever display in the city and the biggest in Europe from a single building in 2004.
The extravaganza was visible from up to 35 miles away in north Wales, Southport and Cheshire.
The display, accompanied by music, was organised by the Liverpool Culture Company and lasted for about 20 minutes.
The celebrations were continuing on Monday with a service of commemoration due to start at 1600 BST - exactly the same time as King Edward VII laid the building's foundation stone.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex are heading the list of dignitaries.
More than 2,500 people are expected to pack the cathedral for the celebrations on Monday.
