Heart unit 'worst for superbug'
Royal Liverpool University Hospital
The Royal Liverpool NHS Trust is the country's 20th worst hospital
A North West heart unit has the highest MRSA levels in the UK for a specialist hospital, say health chiefs.

Broadgreen cardiothoracic centre, part of the Royal Liverpool Hospital Trust, is the worst in the country for the potentially fatal superbug.

The Department of Health figures also show the Royal Liverpool NHS Trust has the worst MRSA figures in the region.

Meanwhile, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust recorded a cut in its superbug rates.

Bug rise

Despite Government initiatives, the number of MRSA cases nationally has gone up by 3.6%.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen NHS Trust is the 20th worst general hospital in the country for the infection.

Between April last year and March this year it reported 88 cases of the superbug - 0.22 cases per 1,000 overnight bed stays.

The Countess of Chester hospital was the region's second worst for MRSA. It reported 32 cases.
