No charges for Wayne Rooney

Football star Wayne Rooney will not be charged after a woman claimed he spat in her face.

The 23-year-old woman alleged that the England and Everton player spat at her during a night out at Manchester club, Ampersand, last month.

Mr Rooney, 18, was interviewed by Greater Manchester Police and a file was passed to prosecuters.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman said there was "insufficient evidence for a prospect of conviction".

Mr Rooney had always denied the allegations.

His agent Paul Stretford had said the complaint was "fatuous and entirely false".

"We were always confident that there was no case for Wayne to answer," added Stretford.

"The original complaint appeared either to be malicious or frivolous, and frankly we are amazed that so much public resource was invested in examining it."

Rooney was on a night out with friends following his team's match against Manchester United on 7 February when the woman said the incident took place.
