The Home Office is considering whether to allow Liverpool to pilot a safe area for prostitutes. The so-called managed prostitution zone is seen as a way of dealing with the issues of sex worker safety, as well as kerb crawling.
The zone would have a health clinic, and would be managed and policed by specially trained workers.
They are seen as a way of giving better support to the women while monitoring the situation.
It comes after a working party involving the city council and other agencies looked at ways of tackling the problem of prostitutes working in residential areas.
Concerned residents
Two prostitutes were murdered in Anfield in July 2003 by 26-year-old Mark Corner, who dumped their body parts in a bin bag in an alleyway.
He is currently detained indefinitely at Ashworth Hospital under the Mental Health Act.
People living in Everton and Kensington are also concerned about dangers to their safety posed by the prostitutes working on their streets at night.
Similar safe area schemes have been piloted in Edinburgh and Doncaster.
It is not yet known which parts of Liverpool would be designated prostitution safe areas if the government gave plans the go-ahead.
