Capital route for city's airport
Liverpool John Lennon Airport
The new link follows lobbying by Liverpool's business community
Travellers in Liverpool will be able to fly to the capital five times a day from Monday.

A new route has begun from John Lennon Airport to London City Airport run by Belgian airline VLM.

Business and tourism leaders say the link is essential after Liverpool was named Capital of Culture 2008.

The five-times-a-day service will run on weekdays. There will be one flight on Saturdays and two flights on Sundays.

The first flight was due to depart Liverpool at 0630 GMT.

Robert Hough, Chairman of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said: "Airport owners Peel Holdings have invested over 60 million in new facilities in recent years to make Liverpool one of the UK's premier regional airports.

"A link to the capital, however, has always been the Airport Company's business development priority and now means the airport and the region is better linked with the important South East market."

VLM Airlines managing director Johan Vanneste said: "We have been impressed with the campaigns mounted by the community and media of Merseyside.

"Clearly, the whole community is committed to using an air link that brings the heart of London closer to Merseyside.

"We look forward to building on that partnership."
