Liverpool wants its friendship celebrations to reach Europe |
The hunt is on for a "Friend Ship" in Liverpool to help promote the city's Capital of Culture programme for 2008 across Europe. The ship will also be used to help the 40,000 children in the city's schools explore the meaning of friendship.
Capital of Culture Company bosses also want the ship to be used to represent the whole of the UK during the capital of culture year.
The ship will replace a Community Globe, which was used by the city during its winning culture campaign.
It is expected to accommodate 35 pupils, who will be encouraged to use it to discuss everything from racism to communication.
'Known for friendliness'
European schools will also be invited to participate by exchanging friendship messages on e-mail.
City council leader Councillor Mike Storey said: ''Liverpool is internationally known for its friendliness. It's an aspect of our culture which we should celebrate and encourage.
''This Friend Ship is an example of how this city is looking at culture in all its forms to make sure 2008 is a year that changes Liverpool for the good, for everyone, forever."
Wally Brown, co-ordinator for Liverpool's Year of Faith in 2004 - which is part of the build-up to the culture celebrations, said: ''Our ship will promote treating each other with respect and showcase the best of UK design and craftsmanship.
"This vessel will be seen right across Europe.''
The Friend Ship takes its maiden voyage in February 2004 and will visit Liverpool primary and special schools until November 2004.
