An international expert on architecture was visiting Liverpool on Tuesday to assess its nomination as a World Heritage Site. The city's waterfront and commercial centre is the UK's only current candidate for the prestigious award.
An assessor from the International Council on Monuments and Sites, Ray Bondin, was touring the city's key buildings and monuments.
They include the Three Graces - the Liver, Port of Liverpool and Cunard buildings - the Albert Docks, Stanley Docks warehouse and the Central Library's rare books collection.
Councillor Mike Storey, city council leader, said: "It will be a unique achievement for a city to become a World Heritage site and Capital of Culture.

"It would really put Liverpool in the super league of European cities.
"The evaluation of Mr Bondin is vital to the outcome of our bid.
"I am sure he will be very impressed by what he sees and I am confident he will be given the friendliest of welcomes by the Liverpool people."
The final decision will be made by the United Nations' World Heritage Committee.
Other UK sites to have received the designation include Stonehenge, Hadrian's Wall, Westminster Palace and industrial sites at Saltaire, in West Yorkshire, New Lanark, in Scotland, and Derwent Valley, in Derbyshire.
