An eight-year-old boy has been electrocuted on a railway line in Merseyside.

Ambulance crews were called to the Oriel Road railway station, in Bootle, at about 2030 BST on Saturday, but the boy died from his injuries in Aintree Hospital.

It is believed that he had been playing on the tracks nearby when he received an electric shock.

British Transport Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

They say they will be interviewing the boy's friends and viewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation.

The station is on the Hunts Cross to Southport line which is operated by Merseytravel.

Police are reminding people living near railway lines to be aware of the dangers posed by their live electricity lines.
