Fireworks hit police station
Patrols have been stepped up in Liverpool after a series of incidents involving fireworks over the weekend including an attack on a police station.

A police officer was taken to hospital following the incident on Sunday night at Speke police station.

The inquiry office doors were damaged following a similar incident when a firework was thrown in to a chip shop in Garston.

Merseyside Police have condemned those responsible, saying the incidents ruin the city's reputation.

The first incident took place at the chip shop in St Mary's Road, at about 2130 BST. No-one was injured.

The police station was then targeted at 2220 BST, leaving the police officer needing treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.
This is an issue that affects the reputation of Merseyside
Chief Superintendent Paul Forrester

Superintendent Graham Yip said uniformed and CID officers were working round the clock "targeting locations and individuals highlighted by members of the community".

He said the force would also be working with trading standards officers to track down outlets where fireworks were sold illegally.

Enormous danger

Chief Superintendent Paul Forrester, Force Operations Manager, added: "This is an issue that affects the reputation of Merseyside as a whole. These activities are enormously dangerous and the people involved are irresponsible in the extreme.

"I would urge parents to be questioning about their children's' whereabouts and who they are with. In order to ensure the safety of everyone, we need to work closely with local residents to identify where these devices are coming from so that we can close them down.

"Anyone with information about the illegal sale of fireworks or their misuse, is urged to contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111."
