A boxing promoter charged with blackmailing the agent of Everton and England footballer Wayne Rooney has appeared in court. John Hyland, 41, from Woolton, Liverpool, has been charged with one count of blackmailing Paul Stretford.
Mr Hyland appeared before magistrates in Runcorn, Cheshire, on Tuesday, when the case was adjourned until a preliminary hearing on 15 September at Warrington Crown Court.
Mr Stretford, 44, is one of football's most prolific agents with dozens of stars represented by his Proactive Sports Group.
After the hearing Mr Hyland released a statement through his solicitor Peter Quinn denying the allegations.
Mr Hyland was released on bail until his next court appearance.
