Different faiths emerged with the rise of the city's port |
Visitors to Liverpool can take a tour of world faiths with a new guide which promotes the city's various influences. Liverpool - Walk of Faith charts the history of the different religions and faiths in the city and features a map of the sites of worship.
The guide covers several Christian denominations, as well as churches serving the German, Greek, Italian, Polish and Swedish communities which developed as a result of the rise of the city's port.
Hope College and the city council have produced the guide which covers the city's first synagogue in 1807, to the UK's first mosque in Liverpool in 1899.
Councillor Warren Bradley, executive member for leisure and culture at the city council, said: ''The city is fortunate to have been a world port which has in turn educated and developed an attitude of appreciation to a multitude of faiths and cultures.
''By trying to understand differences and confronting prejudices, these many diverse communities have contributed enormously to the past and present of Liverpool.
"This guide is just one way we can ensure future generations recognise and celebrate the benefits of this simple but amazing lesson.''
The free guide has been produced to coincide with Liverpool's Year of Faith and Communities in 2004, as part of its bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
